Resumen: This paper seeks to identify and explain barbadians' participation in what we consider linguistic acts of identity. In considering the island as a single speech community, the selection of labels for events of the Crop Over festival saw a movement towards vernacular forms. In keeping with LePage and Tabouret Keller's belief, we suggest that lexical innovations that have emerged as a result of the festival's revival emanated from a process involving cultural focussing and national identities. Leaders and organisers of the national festival engaged in acts of identity to distinguish their community from others and Barbados' festival from similar ones in the region. Their internation was to maintain their respective parochial and national identity. In this paper we provide a sociohistorical overview of the festival, and focus on some of the lexical innovations that have emerged as a result of its revival.
