A little miss in the land of little women : Louisa May Alcott and Jamaica Kincaid

It should have come as no surprise that there's a very strong narrative voice in literature today thet pays tribute to Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women. And like Louisa May Alcott, Jamaica Kincaid is a true daughter of Charlotte Brontë. This paper looks at the ways in which Alcott's text provides the backgroound against which Kincaid, in the novel Lucy, tests the cultural authority of the United States in terms of gender - the issues being the domestication of the 'savage' girl child and the primary role the mother plays in her life. But does this mean that Jamaica Kincaid has forfeited her identity as part of the Caribbean literary tradition?

A new breeding population of oxyura jamaicensis (ruddy duck) on St. Martin, Lesser Antilles

Ruddy Ducks, Oxyura jamaicensis, are expanding their range southward from the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas into the Lesser Antilles. Breeding of this species has now occurred on multiple islands in the Lesser Antilles. During wetland surveys on St. Martin in January 2001, a large group of over 250 Ruddy Ducks were observed in Fresh Pond and an additional three were observed at Little Bay Pond. Surveys during the winter months of 2002, revealed a single breeding pair with 5 duckling in Fresh Pond. Surveys during the winter months of 2003 revealed multiple breeding pairs of this species in both Fresh Pond as well as in Little Bay Pond. This species, numbering over 500, is now a year-round resident and breeder on St. Martin.

One of the most controversial legislative processes during the first days of 2018 was the process of two projects that were intended to create A new juvenile justice law. It was very striking that the Legislature approved both projects, although they were totally opposite and contradictory to each other. The Legislature thus sent a confusing message about what public policy should be in relation to such an important issue. Both projects were referred to the governor for their consideration and this proceeded to veto them. In a press release, the governor said he thought a consensus should be sought between both projects and, for these purposes, he asked the Legislature to initiate this process; and also listen to all Sectors of interest in this matter.

A prophetic challenge to the Church (recurso electrónico) : the last word of Bartolomé de las Casas / Luis N. Rivera-Pagán

In 1566, after more than five decades of immense and exhausting endeavors to influence and shape the policy of the Spanish state and church regarding the Americas, years of drafting countless historical texts, theological treatises, colonization projects, prophetic homilies, juridical complaints, political utopias, and even apocalyptic visions, Bartolomé de las Casas knows very well that the end is at hand: the end of his life and the end of his illusions of crafting a just and Christian empire in the New World. It is a moment of searching for the precise closure, the right culmination and consummation of a human existence that since 1502 had been intimately linked, as no other person of his time, to the drama of the conquest and Christianization of Latin America, a continent, as has been so aptly asserted, “born in blood and fire

A quarter century of variation in color and allometric characteristics of eggs from a rain forest population of the Pearly-eyed thrasher (Margarops fuscatus)

Eggs color, size, and shape vary considerably within and among female Pearly-eyed Thrashers (Margarops fuscatus). Results of a 25-yr study (1979-2004) are presented to provide comparative data. In a sample of 4,128 eggs, typical shape was prolate spheroid; but several variations were observed, depending on the age, stature, and physiological condition of the female, as well as environmental influences such as the availability of essential nutrients. Froms a subset of 3,867 eggs measured between 1979 and 2000, a species-specific egg shape, or elongation index of 1.44 was derived (mean=1.44; SD=0.07; range = 0.93-1.85). Pooling eggs from among completed clutches of 1-4 eggs in each (mode=3), the average egg measured 32.40 mm in length (SE= 0.02; range = 18.13-38.97 mm) and 22.50 mm in breadth (SE=0.01; range =16.81-33.61 mm). Observed average fresh egg mass for a set of 3,581 eggs was 8.8 g. Of three standard formule used to predict average fresh egg mass, Rahn et al. (1985) was the most accurate (8.7 g). Averaging five standard formulae resulted in an egg volume of ca. 7.0 cm3. In the Pearly-eyed Thrasher, egg size and mass tended to decrease just as it does in several on-passerine species. Light clutch mass relative to body mass is a preadaptation that increases Margarops' potential of laying more clutches throughout its reproductive life, thus enhancing its lifetime reproductive success and ensuring its continual survival in the region
